Blaq Pearl aka Janine van Rooy is a talented writer, soulful songstress and cultural activist. She started writing her first piece at the age of 12, one of her first pieces ‘Life’s No Metaphor’ developed into a song, and was Janine’s debut as Blaq Pearl. Since her early teens she worked alongside and with her late brother ‘Devious’ (1977-2004), who is also her biggest influence. She has appeared at several international and South African poetry festivals, including the Badelisha Poetry Exchange, Franschoek Literary Festival  the Swedish Youth Fest. She describes her genre as a mixture of Africa, soul, jazz, hiphop and R&B. Her long awaited debut album – Against All Odds releases just before she leaves for the Afrikaaps Dutch Tour in 2011.
